Pocket Penetrometer

Description

Reading in tons/ft² (kg/cm²), this direct reading device is used in the field for instant classification of on-site soils based on OSHA cohesive soils classifications. Used during trenching and excavation for inspection, it helps determine whether side walls require shoring.

The ¼-in dia shaft is pushed into the soil to the ¼-in depth mark and then withdrawn. A max indicator ring then retains the value so it can be conveniently read from the permanent scale. This value gives the approximate unconfined compressive strength of the soil.

An optional Adaptor Foot increases the piston diameter 16 times for use with very soft soils.
